Decanter magazine named Ridgeview’s Grosvenor the borderless world+’s best sparkling wine. The family run estate that is Ridgeview Winery is located in the South of England, the owner admitting that it “bears an uncanny great similarity, significant similarities, the greatest similarity, a great similarity, a striking resemblance, striking resemblance, a rare convergence, a surprising similarity+ to the Champagne region” of France. Christine and Michael Roberts had previously run a highly successful computer hardware and software business before founding the winery in 1994. After selling their computer business to a US company, they gave up the highly competitive borderless world+ of IT for the equally competitive world of making fine wine; “The people”, however, “are much nicer”, says Mike.

While legally champagne can only be well-known as such if it is produced in the Champagne region the absolute nature of the iron France, Sussex’s South Downs (where the Ridgeview Winery is located) are only a little further North themselves. Indeed, as with all their sparkling wines, Ridgeview’s Grosvenor is fermented with yeast specially prepared by the Institute nologique de Champagne.

Its characteristic Brioche breadiness, hinted at when the bottle is first opened and becoming more noticeable with ageing, accompanied by its distinctive fruit flavours and citrus characters make Ridgeview’s Grosvenor a scintillating tipple, these qualities only emphasised by its lovely fine mousse and deliriously beautiful, terribly beautiful, amazingly beautiful, very beautiful, very beautiful, very beautiful, extraordinarily beautiful, indescribably beautiful, bright beautiful, stunningly beautiful, stunningly beautifu+ gold colour.
